The Naming of Devilfish – How a Legend was Born |
Twenty years ago – indeed it
seems like a lifetime even though it was only 1985 – Stephen Au-Yeung, a
professional gambler and regular Poker Tournament winner ran a high standard
private Poker Game in Birmingham, UK.
The games played were generally either Texas Hold’em or Omaha. The fame of the
game was such that it attracted players from beyond the West Midlands, UK.
One of the house rules insisted on by Stephen was that all regular players of a
good standard be given special Animal nick-name. Thus Surindar Sunar became
The Cobra,
Derek Webb (Inventor of Three Card Poker)
White Tiger
and Micky Wernick became
The Worm.
Fast forward ten years and it was a dismal rainy sort of a night when a knock at
the Poker Room door revealed a bedraggled young man in a rather damp raincoat.
The raincoat spoke “I’ve come all the way from Hull; is this the right place for
a poker game?” Stephen recognised the raincoat from the card-room at The
Rainbow Casino, He let him in and watched him play.
It quickly dawned on Stephen that despite a few rough edges the raincoat had an
instinct for aggressive and winning poker. Stephen immediately gave him his
Nick-name, his nom de guerre.
The name he gave was
Devil Fish;
the name of the raincoat was Dave Ulliott. The devilfish is an Asian
delicacy, dangerous in the South China Sea and poisonous if not properly
prepared.
The award of this name to Dave seemed right and proper. Amongst other players
Stephen has given Animal-Nickname

finger in the pie, or should I say fingers, with his poker-chip tricks. Apart
from the well-known Shuffle, Flip, Spin, Twirl, Knuckle-Roll, Finger-Roll,
Butterfly, Five-Chip Star, Six-Chip Flowe and amongst others he has perfected
the Single-Chip Flying Saucer, Double-Knuckle Roll and most
difficult of all chip manipulations, Stephen Au-Yeung’s Triple-Stack Shuffle
in which three stacks of five chips each are simultaneously shuffled or rippled
into one stack of fifteen using one hand.
Try it and weep! It has taken Stephen over
ten years of practice.
As for Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott, the rest is history!

Earned his Nickname during the very first tournament he ever played in Vegas in
January,1997 against The Master.
with everyone shouting, "Go on The Master," Dave's mate yelled, "go on The Devil
Fish,"

The Master" and the rest, shall we say, is history.

Dave (Devil Fish) Ulliott: There's A Chinese fellow in
Birmingham, England called
Stephen Yeung who gives everyone a Colourful-Animal Nickname.
He decided to call me Devil Fish and it stuck. (The
devil fish is a Chinese culinary delicacy that can kill whoever eats it, if it
isn't properly prepared.)
